I Tell Whoever Will Listen, Petri-Wood is Safer/ Better in Quality Than Commercial Paints and Sealers.

Sent: Wednesday, June 08, 2011 Subject: Chainsaw carving I am thrilled that I have come across your products. I am a "green" guy. What is unique about what I do as a chainsaw artist is that my entire process is earth-friendly. So far, I know of no other chainsaw artisans doing this. I tell as many people about it, whoever will listen, because it is safer and better in quality than commercial paints and sealers. I have already begun to tell people about your pet, garden, and wood products. I am glad there is a place where people can purchase non-toxic supplies. I apply milk paint to my carvings, which bonds with the molecular structure of the wood and allows sealers to pass through itself into the wood. I have purchased a 5 gallon container of Petri-Wood and have applied it to a carving I recently made and it seemed to work well with the milk paint. What was interesting to see (I do a lot of experiments) is that after I applied the Petri-Wood to the wood and after it dried, the milk paint seemed to bond with the Petri-Wood and into the wood....at least that is what I am guessing. Over time, I do not know if the milk paint will continue to stick, but it seemed to create a strong bond with the Petri-Wood.If you were a chainsaw artist, carving pine wood, how would you proceed to treat the wood, before, during, and after? I attached an example of a carving that I made, so that you can understand and see the process. This carving is approximately 17 inches wide by 4 1/2 feet high. What I am looking for is a number of coatings you would suggest to place on the carvings to ensure optimal results. Are there chainsaw artists working with Petri-Wood that I can contact? I have contracted Virgil Pelton to seal with Petri -Wood at least 3 buildings that have had major water issues, Example: when it rained the water would literally run down the inside wall of our buildings. This has been an ongoing problem for many years some of them 10 to 15 yrs. The Petri-wood product has sealed up all of the areas it has been applied to and we are no longer having water issues. I am currently having Virgil seal as many buildings as I can under my authority this product works on CMU block, Brick, Wood as well as EFIS or Stucco coverings.

We contracted with a local lumber mill to produce some log cabin siding. Dr. Ben suggested green wood was ideal for stabilization. The paramount objective was to arrest the wood shrink common to log cabin structures which is what causes log splitting. With the help of a local logger and the saw mill operator we were able to do a transition from standing timber to finished siding in 4 hours! The moisture content was still 48%. The log cabin siding was placed on sawhorses with the round side up. We proceeded to spray the timber using an airless paint gun. Dr. Ben suggested 1 gallon of Petri-wood per 100 square foot of surface area for the 2” x 6” x 16’ siding would be a satisfactory application amount. He said treatment of one side was all that was needed. We sprayed the wood to a glossy wet finish, by the time we sprayed a 100 square foot area the Petri-wood had wicked into the wood. A two coat process was all that was needed to apply the proper amount
The log cabin siding was placed on sawhorses with the round side up. We proceeded to spray the timber using an airless paint gun. Dr. Ben suggested 1 gallon of Petri-wood per 100 square foot of surface area for the 2” x 6” x 16’ siding would be a satisfactory application amount. He said treatment of one side was all that was needed. We sprayed the wood to a glossy wet finish, by the time we sprayed a 100 square foot area the Petri-wood had wicked into the wood. A two coat process was all that was needed to apply the proper amount.
As the crew cut the wood to proper length we observed that the Petri-wood had wicked all the way through the siding but was dry to the touch. The timber was getting lighter each hour.
Dr. Ben suggested we wait at least 72 hours prior to painting the wood. He said the catalytic conversion taking place in the wood created an ethanol gas that in discharge could bubble the paint. We elected to use a Sherwin Williams exterior paint formulated for water cleanup. The paint easily adhered to the treated wood.
We used both brush and roller to apply the paint, making sure we had adequate paint in all the cracks and crevasses. Since the siding had a lap and gap joiner it was not necessary to use chink between the logs. We may come back and chink the logs for aesthetics at a later date. The chink manufacturer advised us that tests they had performed suggested a perfect adhesion and that the Petri-wood would not compromise the chink.

Rachel's Dream Cabin in Upstate New York IS TREATED WITH PETRIWOOD
It took us 10 years to finally have our little dream cabin built upstate NY on our beautiful rustic land. Because we use the land infrequently and because of persistent encroachment of Mother Nature we wanted to do everything we could to preserve and protect the cabin.When we searched for wood preservers we found Cedar Oil products and right away felt this is exactly the product we're looking for:non-toxic, natural, pest repellant, preserve wood from decaying. The weather upstate NY is extreme, it has brutal winter, long snowing season, a lot of rain and strong wind, and yes, a lot of bugs including wood borers. We constantly see wood cabins decaying on the road side. When the cabin was built we felt that our top priority is to preserve the wood itself, even considering covering it with stucco.

The first picture shows when my husband started spraying the cabin, the left side of the cabin has not been sprayed yet, one can see the Petri-wood didn't change the stain color at all. It just made it look like the wood got wet. The whole process was very easy and it was done in less than an hour (5-gallons). When we were working on the spraying, our contractor came to visit. He saw Petri-wood and told us he's not familiar with the product. After reading the label, he took a picture of the label and said, "This looks like a good product, and it's all natural, I am going to look into it for my other customers"

Fresh rain just rolls off the treated surface!
The day we finished spraying the whole cabin, it rained during the night throughout the next day. I took a picture showing that the rain simply roll off the wood, and this is after at least 12 hours of rain. Now we feel very good that the cabin is well protected. Isn't it lovely! --Rachel H. N.Y. Petriwood Saves James' Deck and Picnic Table
My search for a restorative product for my exterior wood structures led me to Petri-wood. I took a gamble and ordered from the website. Again, the wood is green, gray and no longer shows off the wood's natural colors and hues.Notice the wonderful change to the look of the wood after treatment with Petri-wood. It has cleaned up the grey/green deposits and left the lumber water free and permanently protected from rot, cupping and fastener rejection. I think its safe to say the table turned out very nicely thanks to Petri-wood. Not only does it look so much better, it is now protected from further weather damage as well as insect attack. --James Mueller, S. Dakota

I was looking for a cure for my weather-beaten deck, a treatment that could return some of my back deck's former beauty. The elements, sun, rain and tempurature change had taken a toll, it looked grey/green and dingy.

David's Outdoor Chair Shows No Signs of Age
I picked up a gallon bottle to preserve a chair made from pressure treated wood 5 years ago. I treated it once and then applied a second coat a few days later. I have not applied any since then. The chair shows none of the typical signs of being in the weather for all that time. It can be applied with a roller, brush or sprayer. It quickly soaks into the wood and seals the fibers from the inside. Other wood preservative products will form a seal on the surface of the wood that is evident by the beading of water. Don't expect the same effect with this product. Water will not bead on the surface because the fibers themselves are sealed. That's what makes this stuff great. It won't wear off after a season of use. It becomes part of the wood. The manufacturer boasts that the silica component of the formula pushes the wood into the early stages of petrifaction. I guess it's too early for me to observe that, but the wood has not cracked, checked, warped, twisted, been infested by bugs, or shown any signs of rot. I used less than a half gallon to thoroughly cover every surface of this large chair twice. I plan to get a five gallon can to coat my new fence and another can to protect my future pool deck. Feel free to spend money every year on a surface treatment. I'll invest once in Petri-Wood and be done with it. --David Conley, July 15, 2014
